As we wrap up our study of Unit 1, Bold Actions, we review our unit objectives.
First, review recognizing the author's purpose and finding the Big Idea or So What? of any text. Then, you'll write a story that has a purpose and main idea and that uses the parts of a fictional narrative.
TASKS:

1. Recap of Icarus poetry:  Notice the different structures of the poems, the different intent of the authors, the different poetic elements used.  Respond to each poem with a sentence stem (see handout. Turn it in!)
2. Reading a short story with observant eyes: Notice the characters, setting, and plot points.
How does setting affect the characters and/or the plot of a story?
   Close Reader:  pp 3 - 12
Work 1 - 9 as you read the story.  After we discuss in the next class, you'll write a response on
p 12.
3. Writing a Fictional Narrative-- The ABC story
Why use a confining structure? To practice varied sentence types, transition words, and to effectively use the parts of a short story to an aimed effect.
Get your task sheet (handout). Today is for brainstorming. Come to our next class with a story plan.
#2 and #3 become homework if you don't finish in class.

4. Vocabulary words:  Research, Use, Report.  You'll have time to research in our next class.  A check for use and recording of that use is down for next Tuesday/Wednesday 10/30 or 10/31.

Explore what you see in the poems! Example of sentence stem 4. Can you match the sentence to a response to Poem 1, 2, or 3?
  • If this poem were a burrito, it would fall into my stomach where the acid would completely obliterate it. Goodbye forever, burrito.
  • If this poem were a burrito, it would cause me to question my choices of toppings- like, which one would leave the best taste in my mouth? Which one will make my stomach happy? make my stomach hurt?
  • If this poem were a burrito, it would leave an aftertaste in my mouth to remind me of how much I loved it and how much I want another one.  Burritos forever!
